HISTORY OF AQUACADES

One of
the most elaborate Aquacades took place in 1947 when Poomaikelani
KawananakoaÕ47 convinced Sr. Teresa Augustine, Principal,
that she should be in charge of Aquacades rather than the P.E. Teacher.
Sister allowed ÒPoomaiÓ to take charge and so she
choreographed elaborate routines including exquisite Hawaiian Leis, shipped in
from the Islands, for the show!
In the first yearbook in
1953 was the advent of Block "B" – an honorary athletic society
at NDB which combined fun & school spirit by their frequent rallies &
annual BBQ, ski trip & spring swimming events.
In 1954, Block B sponsored the annual interclass
Water Festival Competition & BBQ
In 1956, the annual water festival became known as
the Aqua Show, whereby classes competed & once again the traditional BBQ
was held.
By 1958, Aquacades became the official name of this
annual tradition. "After weeks of muffled murmuring & hushed excitement, the lavish Aquacades revealed the secrets. The tremendous performances were cheered by the spectators
& rewarded by the
Faculty with the presentation of the coveted pennants."
In the year of 1964, the Senior ÒScotsÓ captured
all four pennants - solo, duet, small & large aquacades for the first time
in the history of Notre Dame, Belmont.
Aquacades has been held in both spring, in
celebration of Foundress Day, and in the fall, as
part of the annual Block ÒBÓ Barbecue or Field Day, combining sports &
water competitions, which sometimes included daughters & their dads!
Currently, Aquacades is held in the spring and
it has become the most popular event for NDB Alumnae to come back to and judge
for the categories of swimming, deck routines, spirit, and backdrops. It always brings back the best of memories!!!!
