From the Desk of the Assistant Principal
Dear Parents,
I want to remind you about our cell phone rules while your daughter is at school. Cell phones are expected to be turned off and tucked away in the student's backpack, purse, locker, etc. Between 8:00 A.M. And 2:55 P.M., students are not to have their cell phones out or turned on. We need your assistance in helping students comply with this rule. I know that sometimes you text or call your daughter during the school day (probably thinking her cell phone is turned off and that she'll get the message when she turns it back on at the end of the day).
However, too often students have forgotten or have chosen not to turn their cell phone off and when your message comes through, their cell phone is activated. Our teachers are very diligent about confiscating cell phones when this occurs during the school day. Students must complete an hour's detention on the assigned detention day before they may have their phones returned to them. This, as you can imagine, has caused much consternation with some students who may lose their cell phone on a Friday and have to wait until the following Tuesday when detention is assigned. We would appreciate your reminding your daughters again about the cell phone rules. We do not enjoy having to confiscate phones because we know how valuable they are to our students. However, phones will continue to be confiscated should they beep or ring or be out of backpacks or purses. We have told students that if they are in the midst of some family emergency or situation and need to have their cell phones with them for the day, they may come to the office in the morning and secure permission to do so. Also, if students need to make an urgent call during the school day, they may come to the office and ask to use our phone or their phone. We are always willing to make exceptions for our students when necessary and just ask that we be informed. However, we cannot justify students calling you during the day from their cell phones because of a change in plans, to ask you to bring homework, etc. Anytime your daughter uses her call phone during the day without permission, she is violating the cell phone rule. All and any help you can give us with this will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at (650) 595-1913, ext. 205.

It's
true, the guy everyone turns to for advice on money got a thin envelope from
Harvard. And what does Mr. Buffett have to say about this? "The
truth is... everything that has happened in my life...that I thought was a crushing
event at the time has turned out for the better." read more...

Parents & Friends of Notre Dame,
Join us for a very special
event. On Tuesday, March 30, filmmaker and award winning
photojournalist, Lou Dematteis, will screen his film, Crimebuster, at Notre
Dame. This film is about Lou's father, former San Mateo County
Superior Court Judge, Louis B. Dematteis. It chronicles Lou's search for
the side of his father he never knew. Crimebuster will be followed by
several short films by Tiger TV students about their own families. The
evening will end in a forum with all of the filmmakers. The evening
begins at 7:00 p.m.
Please R.S.V.P. to Theresa Vallez-Kelly.

A Race to Nowhere will be screened at Menlo Atherton High School Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m. This film examines the systematic pressures faced by youth and teachers today amid a focus on high stakes testing, competing in the global economy and increasingly unrealistic expectations of parents, universities, school districts and society at large. The demands have crushing, widespread consequences. Many students are disengaged, cheating is commonplace, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant and students arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
Tickets for the Menlo Atherton screening are $15. You can purchase tickets at http://rtnmenloatherton.eventbrite.com/

A Message from the Belmont Police Department
Dear Notre Dame Community,
Due to a substantial number of complaints throughout the school year by residents and motorists, speed enforcement around the Notre Dame High School and Elementary School will be substantially increased. It is my intent to highlight responsible driving, especially where kids are walking and playing. One of the tools available to me is education. I hope everyone can take just a moment when they get into their cars and leave school to think about the awesome responsibility it is to drive and the terrible tragedies that occur when we do not give our full attention to this skill. The posted speed limits on a street are the MAXIMUM speed for the road under the best of conditions. In the eyes of the law, school dismissal times provide the worst traffic conditions for both pedestrian and vehicle. School zone and residential zone speed limits are always 25 MPH unless posted otherwise. I hope this can be a group effort because the alternative will be strict enforcement which is not my preferred method. So please, when you get in your cars each day, think about what the car you are driving is capable of and take just a second to ensure you going to get where you are going safely. I would also like to toss out the idea of community. Make it safe for others to drive slowly and safely by doing it yourself. If you are respected into your social circles, lead by example and show others it is important with your deeds, not just your words. If you are a passenger, be vocal because the person who drives the car you are in puts you in danger with each of their mistakes. As a passenger don't distract the driver and allow them to get you to your destination safely. I know these things seem simple, but as life goes on and bad things stay at an arms distance away, we sometimes forget the basics. I am always available for questions. You can reach me through the school office, the police department or by email, scott@belmont.gov. Go Tigers! Officer Scott
