From the Desk of the Principal

Dear NDHS Parents,

In honor of our partnership in the education of your daughters, I am writing to inform you of some important decisions the Board of Directors and the Administration have made to maintain the academic strength of our curriculum and continue to provide comprehensive co-curricular and extracurricular programs that afford our young women every opportunity to achieve their full potential.

On April 27, 2010, the Notre Dame High School Board of Directors approved a $9,195,841 budget for next year based on an enrollment of 500 students. As we approach our second year in the modified block schedule, several strategic initiatives will directly impact the educational experience of your daughters:
  • Class sizes have been significantly decreased with the addition of 14 class sections and 2.6 teaching positions.
  • Our technology programs will improve and expand under the newly created position of Director of Educational Technology.
  • Counseling, Guidance, and College Counseling services will be enhanced with the addition of a full-time counselor, and Campus Ministry will have an additional .5 position to ensure outstanding spiritual life programs for our students.
In addition to cost saving measures in operational and departmental budgets, the following actions are being taken:
  • Salaries have been frozen for all employees.
  • Some non-teaching positions have been eliminated or reduced.
These difficult reductions have been planned with the utmost respect and consideration of our staff without sacrificing programs that will impact our students. We appreciate your prayers, respect for privacy, consideration, and sensitivity extended on behalf of the employees who will not be with us next year.

This balanced budget addresses our economic realities and ensures the integrity of a Notre Dame, Belmont education. Preserving our school's legacy of single-gender education for the current and future generations is our highest priority.

As Notre Dame High School's Principal, I assure you that our stellar programs will provide your daughter with the strongest foundation for her success in college and in life. In fact, the Class of 2010 has had outstanding success in their college admissions as noted in this parent e-bulletin.

Thank you for your supportive partnership as we move forward with conviction and hope. We are certain there is no greater gift to a young woman than a Notre Dame, Belmont education.

Sincerely,

Rita Gleason '66

I am Notre Dame, Are You?
By Julie Clemens, Director of Institutional Advancement

GolfBannerWhen the Institutional Advancement department was designing admissions materials for the year one of the reoccurring conversations was that defining Notre Dame is nearly impossible! Students, parents, faculty & staff, and even alumnae reflected that the uniqueness of NDB exists in the intangible. It's a spirit, a feeling, a sense of community or sisterhood. Hence, I am Notre Dame was born to reflect that NDB is as unique and strong as all the individuals who make up the community at any given moment.
 GolfBanner
The I am Notre Dame message has been well received by prospective students and parents and enthusiastically embraced by our current students. Even at the Welcome Dinner and Parent Orientation for the Class of 2014, our newest community members reflected their personal commitments to the community of NDB.

Many, many parent volunteers of both the leading and the helping variety have offered their time and talents this year, demonstrating their own I am Notre Dame spirit. Your daughters have experienced success through their achievements in the classroom, on the field, court, gym or pool, in the theater or concert hall, and in their loving support of one another in moments of trial and tribulation. Every girl added her thumb print to NDB, and whether her success has been publicly or privately recognized, your daughters grew this year, and they thrived!

So, I implore you to not let us end this remarkable year without your family's personal commitment to the Annual Fund. Our participation is not reflective of how many wonderful experiences your daughters have had. Please don't sit on the sidelines of the NDB community. Instead, make your gift before the end of the school year to join with 34% of our current families who have said, I am Notre Dame. Let us define our year as We are Notre Dame.

Thank you.

NDB Awards Celebration

In consulting with our Department Chairs about the best time to host our Awards Celebration, it was determined that a weeknight is probably best since many families and students have other obligations on the weekend.

The date for our Awards Celebration will be Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Moore Pavilion. The Academic Awards Celebration will honor students in grades 9 - 12 as was done in the past. We look forward to this event as a special time to recognize and acknowledge the study ethic, hard work, and steadfast perseverance of our students.
Final Examination Schedule Review Days

Final Examinations begin on Tuesday, May 25  - Friday, May 28,  2010!  Please refer the Parent Student Handbook for all policies regarding Final Examinations (p. 26)  As we did for first semester, we hope our students take advantage of attending the optional student study day on Monday, May 24 as teachers will provide time for class tutoring.

This day is especially good for students to also gather with friends to form study partners in preparation for final examinations. The day ends for students at 12:00 p.m.  Remember: May 24 is optional attendance for students!

Congratulations Class of 2010
by Rita Gleason '66, Principal

Nothing gives me greater pride in the accomplishment of our students than congratulating seniors on their acceptances into college and universities throughout the country. Whether our alumnae eventually attend these schools depends on many factors not the least of which is cost. However, having achieved admission into excellent schools such as these is in itself the result of excellent and competitive educational programs, engaging and competent teachers, supportive and involved parents, and diligent and focused students.

I share this partial listing of acceptances for the Class of 2010 which will be updated weekly:
  • Harvard University
  • Stanford University
  • Duke University
  • Columbia College
  • Scripps College
  • Villanova University
  • Fordham University
  • University of California: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, Santa Cruz
