Learn the basics of American Sign Language in a fun and easy way! This course includes sign concepts that are frequently used, ASL grammar, history, and terminology. Our experienced and engaging ASL teacher uses hands- on, interactive activities will give students a taste of the unique Deaf Culture. Students will be able to communicate and even perform ASL storytelling by the end of the course! Don't miss this unique opportunity to really experience and learn ASL. Summer basketball at Notre Dame works to strengthen girls’ fundamental skill level for the game while giving them a glimpse of the competitive nature of sports, the spirit of sportsmanship, and respect for the game. The mission of Notre Dame High School Athletics is to cultivate dedication and show the importance of commitment, a competitive spirit, and teamwork. Girls will be given individualized attention in order to improve their abilities on the basketball court, along with numerous opportunities to compete through games and drills. The camp is open to girls of all skill levels entering the 6th through 9th grade. En Garde! One of our most popular returning courses will introduce you to the dynamic sport of fencing. This course is taught by Maestro Anthony Joslin, NDB’s popular fencing teacher and the coach of multiple national champions and Olympic medal winners! You will learn proper measure, tempo change, fast footwork, and controlled bladework. Of course, being able to impress your friends with your mad fencing skills doesn’t hurt, either! Have fun learning a unique skill and get a great workout as a bonus. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. Just remember, the pointy end goes that-a-way! Work with your instructor and the reporters and editors of the NDB Tiger Tracks to learn what makes a great news story, how to do effective interviews, how to brainstorm story ideas, and how bring information together in good journalistic style. This is our very popular "elite" week long for the high performers in the 2010 NDB Middle School Math Contest. The course offers a peek into the fascinating world of math puzzles, games, tricks, and wacky math stories. Students experience a range of advanced activities such as developing strategies to quickly solve Sudoku, learning how the game of Set relates to the 4th dimension, and more. Discover the geometric shape that the ancient philosopher Plato believed contained the power of the entire universe! Enrollment is by special invitation or with approval of the instructor. Learn everything from invitation etiquette to menu planning and decorating strategies. We will focus on three different types of parties: Birthday (of course!), Tea, and a formal dinner to dazzle your family and friends. Each week we will create a guest list, choose a theme and decor, plan a menu, cook the party food, and learn how to pull off those special touches that make your friends glad they could attend your celebration! Learn the art of making an iMovie while having a lot of fun! Apple’s iMovie is a great tool to have for all of your in-class presentations and for making your own cool productions. Spend the first half of the class period learning the amazing possibilities of iMovie. Then, work with your co-anchors to prepare your daily broadcast of the news. Students will utilize the Tiger TV studio for a live broadcast to all of the summer school classes. This is a chance to create and broadcast your own features and become the top news anchor at NDB Summer Academy!
