NDB Summer Academy and Sports CampsAcademic and Enrichment Course and Sports Camp fees include all materials. Some courses are offered at multiple times. All courses are described below.Academic and enrichment courses are Monday through Thursday, June 14 - July 1. Intensive Sports Camps run one week each. Students may take 1 course, 2 courses, 3 courses, or 4 courses. For a full day of education and enrichment, choose one course from each of the four time slots:

American Sign Language
Learn the basics of American Sign Language in a fun and easy way! This course includes sign concepts that are frequently used, ASL grammar, history, and terminology. Our experienced and engaging ASL teacher uses hands- on, interactive activities will give students a taste of the unique Deaf Culture. Students will be able to communicate and even perform ASL storytelling by the end of the course! Don't miss this unique opportunity to really experience and learn ASL. A second level of this popular class is offered this year for students with some previous experience with ASL.

Basketball Intensive
Summer basketball at Notre Dame works to strengthen girls’ fundamental skill level for the game while giving them a glimpse of the competitive nature of sports, the spirit of sportsmanship, and respect for the game. The mission of Notre Dame High School Athletics is to cultivate dedication and show the importance of commitment, a competitive spirit, and teamwork. Girls will be given individualized attention in order to improve their abilities on the basketball court, along with numerous opportunities to compete through games and drills. The camp is open to girls of all skill levels entering the 6th through 9th grade. CSI Forensics
Get the experience of one of our most popular courses by solving crimes and mysteries just like the forensic detectives you see on CSI! Learn how to create DNA profiles and analyze fingerprints, handwriting samples, and microscopic evidence. Use scientific equipment like microscopes, micropipettes, UV lights, and gel electrophoresis boxes. Show off your detective skills in a final evidence report file. The world of crime scene forensics is guaranteed to come alive for you in this one-of-a-kind course.

Intro to Fencing
En Garde! One of our most popular returning courses will introduce you to the dynamic sport of fencing. This course is taught by Maestro Anthony Joslin, NDB’s popular fencing teacher and the coach of multiple national champions and Olympic medal winners! You will learn proper measure, tempo change, fast footwork, and controlled bladework. Of course, being able to impress your friends with your mad fencing skills doesn’t hurt, either! Have fun learning a unique skill and get a great workout as a bonus. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. Just remember, the pointy end goes that-a-way! Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

Journalism
Discover how to be a journalist, an editor, and a creative newspaper designer in this exciting and newsworthy class. Work with your instructor and the reporters and editors of the NDB Tiger Tracks to learn what makes a great news story, how to do effective interviews, how to brainstorm story ideas, and how bring information together in good journalistic style. Learn and use cool journalism software. Practice writing compelling news stories, opinion pieces, and other journalistic writing styles. This one-of-a-kind class will give you the real scoop on the fast-paced world of journalism!

Math for NDB Middle School Math Contest Superstars!
This is our very popular "elite" week long for the high performers in the 2010 NDB Middle School Math Contest. The course offers a peek into the fascinating world of math puzzles, games, tricks, and wacky math stories. Students experience a range of advanced activities such as developing strategies to quickly solve Sudoku, learning how the game of Set relates to the 4th dimension, and more. Discover the geometric shape that the ancient philosopher Plato believed contained the power of the entire universe! Enrollment is by special invitation or with approval of the instructor. Party in the U.S.A.! The Secrets to Planning an Awesome Party
Love to plan and throw parties? Love to cook? Love to eat great food? In this hands-on class you will plan and throw three amazing parties. Learn everything from invitation etiquette to menu planning and decorating strategies. We will focus on three different types of parties: Birthday (of course!), Tea, and a formal dinner to dazzle your family and friends. Each week we will create a guest list, choose a theme and decor, plan a menu, cook the party food, and learn how to pull off those special touches that make your friends glad they could attend your celebration! We will also talk about what makes you a great guest so that you can be sure you will always be invited to everyone else's party. Grab your party clothes and get ready to have some fun! Test Taking Skills for Middle School Students
Tests are your opportunity to show how well you’ve mastered a set of
material or a task. Learning to study, take notes, and stay organized
is only a part of getting good results on your quizzes, tests, and final
exams. No matter how hard you work to prepare, you still need test-taking
strategies be successful. This is true whether the test is objective
(true-false, multiple choice, or fill-in-the blank) or subjective (sort
answer, essay, or oral exams). In this course you will learn all the
tricks to be more successful on all your tests. Learn memory tricks to
make those answers “stick” in your brain. Learn how to choose the best
answer on objective tests, how to structure short answers and essays, and
how to avoid careless mistakes. If you struggle with tests or just want
to improve your skills as the tests get more challenging in middle school
and high school, this is the course for you.

Video Production and Tiger TV
Learn the art of making an iMovie while having a lot of fun! Apple’s iMovie is a great tool to have for all of your in-class presentations and for making your own cool productions. Spend the first half of the class period learning the amazing possibilities of iMovie. Then, work with your co-anchors to prepare your daily broadcast of the news. Students will utilize the Tiger TV studio for a live broadcast to all of the summer school classes. This is a chance to create and broadcast your own features and become the top news anchor at NDB Summer Academy!

This one week camp is designed to instruct students in the game of volleyball with a fun and positive atmosphere. The camp will focus on individual development and self-confidence. The camp will also center on developing and refining individual skills (pass, set, hit, serve, defend) and some competitive game-play. Campers will be grouped according to skill achievement level, and will be challenged according to their level of ability. Excellent instruction and individual attention is stressed. The camp is open to girls of all skill levels entering the 6th through 9th grade. The camp will be staffed by the popular Notre Dame coaches and by players from the Notre Dame volleyball program.

Young Writers Workshop – Creative Expression and Essay Writing
Love creative writing? Need to know how to write a great essay to dazzle your teachers and prepare for high school? Want to improve your writing skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere with lots of positive feedback? This course is for you. Learn the secrets of essay writing in a supportive, collaborative environment, including how to choose a topic, gather information, organize your ideas, and write the paper – with no grades! Also, explore new directions in your creative writing and express yourself through daily writing activities including poetry, short stories, and personal narratives. Have fun and challenge yourself as your polish your writing style and share your creative expressions!
