Courses Exclusively for NDB’S Class of 2014

Freshman-level classes meet Monday through Friday from June 14 to July 9.

Monday, July 5th is a holiday. Students who are required to attend Summer School or are taking a course for high school credit may not miss any classes.

High School English Prep

This course is limited to students currently enrolled in the Notre Dame High School Class of 2014. In this course, students will review grammar and composition skills and will work on selections from the Summer Reading List. Intended for those who are required or recommended to attend Summer School.

Get Your Summer Reading Done

This course is limited to students currently enrolled in the Notre Dame High School Class of 2014. Students will develop skills in comprehension, analysis, and discussion, as applied to the freshman Summer Reading material. This class is intended for the student who wishes to enhance her critical thinking and reading skills, and get a head start on her required summer reading.

Study Skills 2-week course

This course is limited to students currently enrolled in the Notre Dame High School Class of 2014 who have been recommended to take Study Skills. Students will be introduced to the foundational practices needed to succeed in an academically rigorous environment, will learn how to be proactive in their studies, and will acquire information that will enable them to approach their freshman year with confidence.

Lab Essentials and Applications for Biology Students
1-week course

This course is limited to students currently enrolled in the Notre Dame High School Class of 2014. Strongly recommended for all freshmen who are enrolled in Biology or Honors Biology, the curriculum provides a hands-on review of lab procedures and safety, as well as a survey of essential topics such as cell organelles and the scientific method.

Creative Writing

2-week course
This is a Tri-School course

Students who love language, who have creative spirits, who enjoy working with their imaginations, will love this class. Learn to explore the worlds around you and within you through the lens of writing. Develop concrete expository skills and learn how to make your writing flow.

Physical Education - I (for credit: 5 units)

4-week course

This course is limited to students currently enrolled in Notre Dame High School. It meets the NDB graduation requirements for PE-I. This class meets for 60 hours in the afternoons from 6/14 - 7/8. Students are required to complete the entire 60 hours in order to receive credit. One day is provided (7/9/10) for make-up.

High School Soccer Camp

2-week course

This two week camp is designed to instruct students in the game of Soccer with a fun and positive atmosphere. The camp will focus on individual skill development, self-confidence, and some competitive game-play. Campers will be grouped according to skill achievement level, and will be challenged according to their level of ability. Excellent instruction and individual attention is stressed. The camp is open to girls of all skill levels entering the 9th through 12th grade. The camp will be led by long time Notre Dame coach Tim Nixon.

Driver’s Education (for students aged 16 and older)

1-week course
This is a Tri-School course

This class fulfils the state requirements for student preparation for an instructional permit and/or provisional driver’s license. Students must be 15 years or older by the start of class. Students will learn the highway system, basic maneuvers, informed decision-making, and the dangers of impaired driving due to chemical use. This class meets 8 hours per day for 1 full week

Advanced Dance Master Class

2 week course (2 sections available)
This is a Tri-School course

Students with extensive experience in dance will receive intensive instruction in dance form alignment and structure within the context of ballet, contemporary, jazz, and popular styles. This course can serve as training for apprenticeship with the New Ground professional dance company. College credit may be available for qualified students. Audition or prior permission of the instructor are required for enrollment (contact: clorenz@ndhsb.org) Students may enroll in both sections of the course.

College Head Start for Rising Juniors

1 week course

New juniors, Class of 2012, will receive focused, individual attention to help them develop a clear plan for approaching the college-search process. This is an excellent time for juniors to begin this search; before they feel pressure to make a concrete decision. Students will gain an understanding of the Naviance program and its resources, as well as learning the ins-and-outs of other college-search sites and programs. Emphasis will be placed on developing clear college goals and building a competitive resume and transcript. Two sections of this course are available to juniors: Maximum enrollment is 10 students per section.

Courses Exclusively for Rising Seniors

College Head Start for Rising Seniors

1 week course

This course will provide rising seniors, Class of 2011, with focused, individual attention to help them begin the intensive college search-and-application process before they start their senior year. Heavy emphasis will be placed on mastering the Naviance program and understanding its resources, as well as using other college-search sites and programs. Students will walk through a sample of the Common Application, and will learn about the UC/CSU application processes as well as the scholarship search process. Upon completion, students will have identified at least four potential colleges and begun creating an application timeline for each of them. Two sections of this course are available exclusively for seniors: Maximum enrollment is 10 students per section.

College Essay Writing for Seniors

1 week course

In this limited-enrollment course, rising seniors, Class of 2011, will acquire the skills needed to compose and fine-tune a dynamic, individualized college essay. Emphasis will be on in-class writing assignments as well as take-home projects and individual attention from the instructor. Students will work on the structure of essay writing, and receive assistance in identifying and articulating their personal and academic strengths. The process will involve self-reflection, brainstorming, and intensive editing. Each student will complete a version of her college essay as part of this course. Maximum enrollment is 12 students.
