10th Grade English - Anchor Assignments - Highlights

Writing Anchor - English and Social Science

During the fall semester in English, students will continue to improve upon their ability to write a multi paragraph essay. Students will be expected to continue to use MLA (Modern Language Association) Format, and the paragraph structure taught at the 9th grade level. In History classes, the essay format will be reinforced.

Poetry Anchor - English and Social Science

During the fall semester the English Department teaches the poem "Gunga Din' by KIPLING. Social Science lays down the background for Imperialism. Social Science also teaches "White Man's Burden" by KIPLING looking at the idea of Imperialism covered by the same author.

The Sun Also Rises Anchor - English and World Languages

During the fall semester the English Department teaches the novel The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway and the World Languages Department (Spanish classes) teaches a lesson about the history of bullfighting and vocabulary specific to the novel for enrichment.

Master Herold... and the Boys Anchor - English and Social Science

During the spring semester the English Department teaches the play Master Herold... and the Boys by Fugard. Students will perform/read scenes from the play. In History class, students learn about apartheid and the Boer War enriching the novel. The performances will be video taped in English and shown in History class as an assignment then discuss topics relevant to the scenes chosen to perform.
