Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents, Alumnae, Past Parents, and Friends of NDB:

rgleasonNotre Dame students have inherited a legacy of generosity and service to others. From the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur who founded and built our school, to the alumnae who contribute to scholarships in honor of their classmates, to the parents who give their energy and expertise to the school, to the broader community who participate in various campus enhancement projects, the mission of NDB has been passed from generation to generation through a generous philanthropic spirit.

Developing young women to achieve their personal best in all that they do is at the core of every program and decision at NDB. Curriculum is reformulated as new fields and professions emerge while maintaining St. Julie Billiart’s vision of developing young women of compassion and service.

Our most recent graduates, members of the Class of 2010, provide us with many examples of success stories and the relevance of a Notre Dame education. Forty-two percent of this class successfully completed at least one AP course and exam during their high school career. The Class of 2010 also yielded some of the most outstanding college acceptances and enrollments in recent years with two of our graduates attending Harvard University. Other notable university acceptances and enrollments include Georgetown, Villanova, Tulane, Stanford, Scripps, Santa Clara, Berkeley, and UCLA. Remarkably, these academic achievements are reached congruently with deep personal commitment and actions on behalf of social justice causes and our global community.

Those whom Notre Dame serves in 2010-2011 may be very different than many of our alumnae experienced. We have consistently remained a community of Catholic faith, yet 24% of our students bring different faith traditions to our school. Parents who value a Catholic high school experience for their daughters now must invest upwards of $35,000 annually at some Catholic high schools where NDB is a “bargain” at $16,650. This increased cost of an NDB education has meant a more significant investment by the School in our tuition assistance and merit scholarship programs which totaled over $907,000 last year.

On behalf of our students, thank you for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Your involvement will ensure that NDB is here to serve future generations of young women.

Sincerely,
Rita Gleason ’66
Principal

Gifts of Closely-Held Securities:

Gifts of non-marketable securities, shares in closely held corporations, partnership interests or restricted securities will be reviewed prior to acceptance to determine whether:

While the donor is still living, s/he has a legal interest in the life estate with full rights to live there or to rent or sell those rights. The donor continues to take care of the property, pay the taxes, and receive any income the property generates. The donor receives an immediate income tax deduction for the present value of the remainder interest of the residence. Any appreciated value of the property avoids capital gains taxation. Since the transfer occurs outside the donor’s will, it will not pass through probate.

Many employers participate in a matching gifts program as an employee benefit. This is a tremendous benefit that can double or sometimes even triple your gift to the school. Check with your human resources department for matching gift forms.

Memorial and Honorary Tribute Gifts:

Gifts received in memory or in tribute to a loved one can be designated to any fund. Many donors contribute memorial gifts to the Alumnae Memorial Scholarship Fund which is an endowed fund. Gifts made in tribute or memorial will be recognized in the annual report under the honoree’s name.

Endowments to permanently memorialize someone and their values may be established with a minimum gift of $50,000 and the consent of the Gift Acceptance Committee.
